One of the big looming question marks right now for the Texas football program and Oklahoma Sooners in the quest to join the SEC is what year that will actually happen. The deadline for the move for Texas and Oklahoma to officially leave the Big 12 for the SEC looks to be 2025. But obvious, these two schools would like to have that move done before then.

There is a possibility that the Longhorns and SEC could be competing in the SEC by 2022 or 2023, but that is a best case scenario. Looming legal and political battles, along with the Big 12 administration trying to cling on to these two schools for as long as possible, are the main hold ups for the move to the SEC.

Texas and Oklahoma were voted to the SEC unanimously by the existing members, 14-0. That would indicate that there’s not really any hold up from the side of the SEC. There are clearly some logistics to figure out with the SEC once Texas and Oklahoma do start competing in the conference, namely how the division/pod realignment will work.

Other than that, the bottom line will be positively impacted with the additions of Texas and Oklahoma. That would make one think that the SEC would try to get this movement going as soon as possible.

And according to a 247Sports report on Aug. 4, most within the realm of the Longhorns and Sooners camps feel that the move to the SEC will not take until 2025. In fact, this report shows that most at 247Sports associated with Oklahoma and Texas think that this will be the last year in the Big 12 for both schools.

Given how fast the move took place for Texas and Oklahoma to notify the Big 12 of the intention to leave and join the SEC last month, there is some real momentum in favor of getting the two schools in the conference by 2022 or 2023. Although, it’s still hard to pin an exact timeline on when this move will happen.

It is assured that Texas and Oklahoma will be competing in the Big 12 for the 2021-22 athletic calendar. If the Big 12 doesn’t resist much longer, and the SEC can get some pull on any other battles that play out legally in the next 10-12 months, then this move could realistically happen by the fall of 2022.
