In the midst of the second week of fall camp for the Texas football program, all eyes are on the quarterback battle. Sophomore Hudson Card and redshirt junior Casey Thompson are duking it out to figure out who will be the starting quarterback in Week 1. One of those two will be trying to replace the departed senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger.

After declaring for the 2021 NFL Draft this offseason, Ehlinger was picked up by the Indianapolis Colts in the sixth round.

New head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns look to have one of the most important and tightest quarterback battles looming in fall camp around the college football landscape at the moment. Card and Thompson could take this quarterback decision for Sark and his staff right down to the wire during fall camp.

There’s not much time left for Sark and the Longhorns to decide which quarterback should be the Week 1 starter. Texas opens up the regular season slate on Sep. 4 against Louisiana, which gives a little more than three weeks before a decision has to be made.

But it’s likely that we’ll get a decision for the starting quarterback for Week 1 at least a few days ahead of the regular season opener.

Hudson Card really pushing the envelope on Casey Thompson in the Texas football QB battle

Around the time of spring camp, it was presumed that Thompson would have the edge to be the starting quarterback. And with the confidence that Thompson showed in the spring game back in April, his edge looked to remain heading into summer workouts and fall camp.

That might be the case no longer, though. Sark reportedly thinks the two quarterbacks are “not making it easy” for this decision on his shoulders. Card has also shown out well in the early portion of contact drills and non-pads walkthroughs.

If Card can show he can spin the ball well under pressure when full pads practice really kicks into high gear, then he might have the edge over Thompson heading into Week 1. Thompson does look like he lost at least a little bit of ground in this quarterback battle since the conclusion of spring ball.

The fact of the matter is that Sark was going to mostly hit the reset button on this quarterback battle by the time fall camp arrived. And we’re now seeing the truth to that fact play out since there’s still no Week 1 starter announced.

Texas is set to open up the regular season slate at home at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Sep. 4 against the Louisiana Ragin-Cajuns. Sark and the Longhorns will be looking to improve on the 7-3 (5-3 Big 12) mark that former head coach Tom Herman posted last season.
