As the depth chart continues to shake out for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program in the midst of fall camp, we look on to see what changes could be made. With just a few weeks remaining before the start of the regular season, Texas still looks to have a lot to figure out.

At least, that’s what it looks like to the public eye.

Sark and the Longhorns are keeping a lot under wraps in terms of how this depth chart could play out before Week 1. Namely, fans want to know who will be the next starting quarterback in the post-Sam Ehlinger era on the Forty Acres.

But figuring out how the depth chart on the other side of the ball could shake out under new co-defensive coordinators/linebackers coaches Jeff Choate and Pete Kwiatkowski is important too. Texas has essentially a completely new defensive coaching staff, hence some significant change will be on the way this fall compared to last season.

Texas football having an upperclassmen step up this fall in Brenden Schooler

One complete change between each side of the ball this fall compared to last could be where the former Oregon Ducks transfer and converted wide receiver Brenden Schooler could be lining up. Ahead of the final year of his college career, Schooler switched from wide receiver to defensive back.

As Texas looked to restore depth in the defensive backfield this offseason, Schooler’s position switch helped to alleviate some of the concerns on this side of the ball.

And the amount of headway that Schooler has made up the depth chart already is impressive. According to a report from Horns247 (paid content) on Aug. 11, Schooler is getting first-team reps in the defensive backfield in fall practice. That could be a key indication that Schooler is at the top of the pecking order with how this secondary depth chart is playing out in fall camp.

Schooler spent all of last season playing at wide receiver for former head coach Tom Herman. But this wouldn’t be the first time for Schooler playing on the defensive side of the ball. During his freshman campaign at Oregon, Schooler registered 74 combined tackles, one tackle for loss, 0.5 sacks, and four interceptions.

Texas is set to open up the regular season this year on Sep. 4 at home at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium against the Louisiana Ragin-Cajuns. Sark and the Longhorns will be looking to improve upon the 7-3 (5-3 Big 12) record under Herman from last season.
