Texas Football: Sarkisian says Whittington ‘earned a lot of trust’
With fall camp fully ramped up for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program this week, it’s a good time to look at who’s stepping up in the spotlight. Since we are also less than four weeks ahead of the start of the regular season slate, Texas is really getting to crunch time in full-pads drills this fall.
Sark and the Longhorns are now opening up fall camp with all eyes falling on the quarterback battle between sophomore signal-caller Hudson Card and redshirt junior Casey Thompson. But there should also be a good level of attention on the supporting cast that will be pushing this offense this fall along with either Card or Thompson.
A stud in this supporting cast at the skill positions for the Longhorns this year is the former five-star recruit and Cuero, TX, native Jordan Whittington. The redshirt sophomore wide receiver Whittington had a good stint by all indications for Texas throughout essentially every phase of the offseason.
He’s also off to a solid start in fall practice for Sark and the Longhorns. And considering he could be the most important starter in the receiving corps for the Longhorns this fall, seeing a fully healthy and productive Whittington show out in fall camp is critical.
Texas football head coach Steve Sarkisian very high on the versatility of Jordan Whittington
Sark did note in media availability this week that Whittington is looking to be one of the most versatile skill position players in this offense. He tabbed that Whittington has “earned a lot of trust from the coaches and players” and that he essentially is one of the most versatile players at the staff’s disposal this year.
The multiple threat that Whittington can be for this offense is something that we should expect Sark to utilize right away. When healthy, Whittington can be one of the more explosive and agile threats in the entirety of the Big 12.
His speed can be shown sideline-to-sideline, in the middle of the field when shaking opposing defenders, and in the straight line on deep balls. It’s hard to imagine all of the possibilities that Sark and the Longhorns have to utilize Whittington in this new offensive scheme this fall.
Whittington, Sark, and the Longhorns are set to open up the regular season slate on Sep. 4 at home at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium against the Louisiana Ragin-Cajuns. Individually, Whittington will be looking for his first fully healthy run with Texas. He returns this year with 223 career receiving yards (9.7 yards per catch), no receiving touchdowns, 50 rushing yards (16.7 yards per carry) and one rushing score under his belt.
