Texas Football: 3 reasons Hudson Card should be the starter
The ability to spin the ball
One of the main reasons why Longhorns fans are so excited about what Card brings to the table for them is the fact that he has a strong and accurate arm when sitting in the pocket. If given the ability to sit in the pocket and break down opposing defenses, then Card could be the better option in this quarterback competition.
A lot of that discussion traces back to when Shane Buechele and Sam Ehlinger were in a quarterback battle prior to the start of the 2018 campaign. Ehlinger obviously won that battle out. But there was an argument that existed that Buechele’s accuracy in a settled pocket could benefit former head coach Tom Herman more so than Ehlinger with the experienced offensive line coming back at the time.
Texas once again has an offensive line that is very experienced coming back this fall. Card should be given the opportunity to get a little bit more time in the pocket than Ehlinger did at times over the course of the past two seasons.
Card has also reportedly (per Horns247, paid content) done well during media availability when given the chance in one-on-one skill position passing drills. His arm is looking more precise on a consistent basis than either Thompson or incoming freshman Charles Wright.
The arm strength was always there for Card, it’s just a matter of dialing it in when he comes under pressure in the pocket. That is the major question mark with him this fall.
