Texas Football: Casey Thompson spends most of his time ‘watching film’
It’s not out of the ordinary for any quarterback fighting for a starting spot with Texas football to spend a lot of time during the day watching film and studying the game as a whole. But what redshirt junior signal-caller Casey Thompson does in his spare time, at his apartment, is something that shows his commitment to the game of football.
A job that once looked to be Thompson’s for the taking is now one that he’s going to have to do a lot to solidify in the midst of fall camp. There seems to now be some doubt about how Thompson can lock in on this job.
According to a report from Horns247 on Aug. 12 (paid content), Thompson isn’t the most connected with all of his teammates off of the field, which could be something that takes an edge away from him in this quarterback competition. But it is also interesting that this report notes that Thompson often spends time “watching film at his apartment” when he’s away from team football activities.
This sounds like something that Thompson has in common to some degree with star sophomore running back Bijan Robinson, who is also his best friend on the team. Thompson and Robinson aren’t the most social players off of the field among all on this team, but they’re clearly committed to football.
Texas football redshirt junior QB Casey Thompson committed to getting the starting job this fall
Thompson looks to be doing everything he can to put his best foot forward and try to win this impending quarterback battle ahead of Week 1 over sophomore Hudson Card. At the outset of the offseason, it definitely looked like Thompson had the edge over Card in this quarterback battle.
But this quarterback competition now looks to be neck and neck between these two.
It’s hard to know at the moment who new head coach Steve Sarkisian is leaning to for the starting quarterback in Week 1. We’re only a few weeks away from the start of the regular season slate, so a starting quarterback should be announced within the next 10 or 14 days.
Texas is set to open up the regular season on Sep. 4 at home at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium against the Louisiana Ragin-Cajuns. Sark and the Longhorns will be looking to improve upon the 7-3 (5-3 Big 12) record the team put up last season under former head coach Tom Herman.
