Texas football could be closer to flipping 4-Star Larry Turner-Gooden
A serious set of inconsistencies on the trail of late for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class has amounted to a good bit of uncertainty for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff heading into the fall. But there are a few paths forward where Sark can lock in a top 10 ranked 2022 class for Texas in the nation.
This path forward that seems most realistic for Sark and the Longhorns to reel in a top 10 ranked 2022 class in the nation involves landing three or four potentially elite prospects this fall. The four to watch include five-star Frisco-Liberty wide receiver Evan Stewart, five-star North Shore cornerback Denver Harris, five-star Bowie offensive lineman Devon Campbell, and four-star Bishop Alemaney (CA) athlete/safety Larry Turner-Gooden.
The latter of those four key prospects for the Longhorns to get in the 2022 class is currently committed elsewhere. The Calabassas, CA, native Turner-Gooden committed to head coach Herm Edwards and the Arizona State Sun Devils in the PAC-12 back on Feb. 26, 2021.
But since that point, there were pretty consistent rumblings that the Longhorns and Penn State Nittany Lions had the possibility of flipping the commitment of Turner-Gooden when he takes his next set of official visits in the fall. Turner-Gooden is set to have official visits with Arizona State (Nov. 6), Penn State (Sep. 18), and Texas (Oct. 16) this fall.
Getting Turner-Gooden to campus on the weekend of the home Big 12 showdown at DKR against the Oklahoma State Cowboys could be key. That should be a great gameday atmosphere right in the thick of the Big 12 slate for the Longhorns.
Multiple factors could lead to Texas football having the ability to flip 4-Star ATH Larry Turner-Gooden
There are numerous other factors that would lead one to think that the Longhorns have a realistic shot to flip the commitment of Turner-Gooden this fall. One is the reported (per Horns247, paid content) ruling put in place from an investigation into the Arizona State football program concerning some of the key recruiters going after Turner-Gooden.
Arizona State defensive backs coach Chris Hawkins was reportedly placed on administrative leave this week in the wake of this investigation. Hawkins is the primary recruiter for Turner-Gooden, and if he is dismissed officially by the school at any point in the near future, that could go a long way to Texas opening the door to further win over his interests.
And the other factor at work here could be the subsequent NIL ruling and the move for Texas from the Big 12 to the SEC. Turner-Gooden’s activity on social media of late gives the clear indication that he’s interested in pursuing the potential his name, image, and likeness has, when he takes his talents to the next level.
Texas in the SEC would give Turner-Gooden one of the biggest NIL platforms that he could find anywhere. That could be one factor that leads him to have more interest in Texas in the coming weeks and months.
This is a key time for new safeties coach Blake Gideon to make some headway in the recruitment of Turner-Gooden. Gideon is the primary recruiter going after the 6-foot and 180-pound California native.
According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class now ranks at No. 10 in the nation and in the second spot in the Big 12 behind the Oklahoma Sooners. Texas now has 17 commits in the 2022 class, with the latest coming from three-star Warren Easton (LA) cornerback Ronald Lewis.
