Bama getting edge over Texas football for 5-Star CB Denver Harris
It would be absolutely tragic for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class to miss on any of the remaining trio of five-star targets in the coming months. That aforementioned key trio of prospects that Texas needs to do well with in the 2022 class includes five-star Frisco-Liberty wide receiver Evan Stewart, five-star North Shore cornerback Denver Harris, and five-star Bowie offensive lineman Devon Campbell.
There are other important targets for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns to get right for the 2022 class, but that trio of five-star prospects should be the top priority. One key prospect that Longhorns fans really feel it is key to get in the 2022 class is the Houston-area native Harris.
This 6-foot-1 and 180-pound elite cornerback had the Longhorns prioritizing him for a good while now. But there are other suitors trying to win over his interests too. Harris took unofficial and official visits with the Longhorns, Texas A&M Aggies, Alabama Crimson Tide, and LSU Tigers, back in June.
Texas, Texas A&M, Alabama, and LSU, were the top four schools that Harris listed back in February. And that remains to be true that those look like the top four to land his commitment.
Texas football sliding with 5-Star CB Denver Harris at the wrong time
This is a recruitment where new cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph and special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks need a big win. Texas recently lost out on four-star West Brook (TX) safety Bryce Anderson to the in-state rival Aggies. Not to mention the decommitment of four-star Memorial cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau in the past few weeks.
Missing out on Harris could be a real back-breaker for the Longhorns 2022 class, along with some of the other recent flops on the recruiting trail among key defensive back prospects.
Yet, Texas doesn’t appear to be trending in the right direction at the moment with Harris. The latest expert 247Sports Crystal Ball Prediction put in for Harris went to the Crimson Tide. The Rivals FutureCast now has more than 80 percent of its analysts and publishers picking Harris to land with Alabama.
The Rivals FutureCast didn’t start to trend this heavily in favor of Alabama to land Harris until the last three weeks. Texas was actually the favorite throughout most of the spring and summer months to land Harris over the likes of Alabama, Texas A&M, and LSU.
Whenever Alabama starts to gain momentum on the recruiting trail, it is very difficult to slow down. This is not a great sign at this point for Joseph, Banks, and the Longhorns.
Alabama got the last word with Harris during the visit season two months ago. And Texas is not doing great on the recruiting trail of late with top blue-chip prospects.
Former Texas cornerbacks coach Jay Valai and defensive coordinator/inside linebackers coach Pete Golding are the top recruiters for Bama going after Harris. And they appear to have more traction with the North Shore product of late than the Longhorns’ duo of recruiters.
Harris is one of the top-ranked remaining prospects on the board at this point for the Longhorns 2022 class. He ranks as the nation’s No. 9 2022 high school prospect, No. 3 cornerback, and the top overall prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).
