In the first scrimmage of fall camp thus far for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program, there was plenty to unpack. With a number of spots on the depth chart on both sides of the ball still needing to be figured out, it was important to see who the ones and twos were on each squad in this initial fall scrimmage.

One of the more important positions for Sark and the Longhorns to figure out in fall camp is at slot receiver. Texas lost former Gatorade National High School Football Player of the Year and touted four-star recruit, Jake Smith, to the NCAA Transfer Portal this offseason. The rising junior Smith was supposed to be the starter for Texas in the slot this fall.

Thus the slot was left to redshirt sophomore wide receiver Jordan Whittington and former walk-on Kai Money to figure it all out. The good news here is that Money did really well in the first fall scrimmage by all indications.

We expect Whittington to be solid for the Longhorns this fall. That is if he actually remains healthy.

Texas has yet to see a fully healthy season (or anything close to it) out of Whittington in the past two years.

Kai Money a bright spot for Texas football in a disappointing fall scrimmage

Even more so than Whittington, Money was reportedly (per Horns247, paid content) the most consistent wideout for Sark and the Longhorns across the board. Apparently, Texas didn’t have a great showing for either of the two squads on offense.

It’s hard to tell at the moment if that is due to the strength of the defense, or just the offense being out of rhythm.

This is big for Texas to at least have some wideout stick out from this scrimmage. According to an Inside Texas report noting the recap from the scrimmage (paid content), there was a lot left to be desired from what the wide receivers did on Aug. 14.

Moreover, the quarterbacks reportedly were pretty disappointing in this first fall scrimmage. That might not be all that shocking since Texas is still trying to break in two quarterbacks with zero starting experience in actual game action.

But we have to be hoping for more encouraging signs coming out of the second fall scrimmage before the 2021 regular season opens. For now, the Longhorns have to be in a period of reflection for what went wrong on the offensive side of the ball.

And we can at least appreciate the solid performances from this scrimmage, reportedly including the likes of Money and standout senior linebacker DeMarvion Overshown.

Money doesn’t have all that much experience coming back for the Longhorns this fall, but at least he has some actual game reps. Last season, he registered 10 catches for 76 receiving yards (7.6 yards per catch), and one receiving touchdown. That lone career receiving touchdown for Money came in the Longhorns’ regular season-opening win last fall against the UTEP Miners.
