All eyes should be falling on the Indianapolis Colts to see if the rookie former sixth-round draft pick Sam Ehlinger can surpass Jacob Eason to seal the backup job behind the currently-injured Carson Wentz. It’s either going to be the former Washington Huskies and Georgia Bulldogs signal-caller Eason or Ehlinger getting the start for the Colts on the afternoon of Aug. 15.

The Colts are set to take on the former Baylor Bears head coach Matt Rhule and the Carolina Panthers out of the NFC South in the first preseason game of 2021, on Aug. 15. And Ehlinger has a shot to do something that was presumed to take at least a year or two for him to get to.

Ehlinger could potentially put himself in a position to start for the Colts in Week 1 of the regular season if Wentz isn’t back from his lower-body injury yet. But that is a big role for Ehlinger to take on right away.

The good news for the former Longhorn Ehlinger is that the spotlight was never really too big for him at Texas. He competed with confidence and strength right away during his true freshman campaign on the Forty Acres. We’ll see if that same mentality translates to the NFL in his preseason debut with the Colts.

Ehlinger will bring nearly 11,500 career passing yards, 94 passing touchdowns, 27 interceptions, just shy of 2,000 rushing yards, and 33 rushing scores to the table for the Colts. He’s a dual-threat quarterback that should give head coach Frank Reich and the Colts a much different dynamic than they will get out of Eason.
