Colt McCoy

Prior to the Colts picking up Ehlinger with the 218th overall pick in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, the most recent draft pick among former Longhorns quarterbacks was Colt McCoy. Back in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns selected McCoy 85th overall. The two-time Heisman Trophy finalist has established a long career for himself in the pros too.

McCoy just keeps finding new backup roles to solidify himself, now in his 11th year in the NFL. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals this offseason as the backup for the former Oklahoma Sooner and Texas A&M Aggie Kyler Murray. McCoy is an interesting fit that can help with mentoring Kyler for the former Texas Tech Red Raiders head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

The Cardinals are the fifth team that McCoy has played for in his NFL career to date. The other four teams are the New York Giants, Washington Football Team, Browns, and the 49ers. He is joining a fellow former Longhorn veteran and linebacker Jordan Hicks with the Cardinals this year.

McCoy has appeared in 44 games in his career to date, impressively starting in 30 of them. He’s registered an 8-22 record as a starter. And he has 6,455 career passing yards, 30 passing touchdowns, 28 interceptions, 78.1 traditional quarterback rating, 509 rushing yards, and two rushing scores, under his belt.

There’s an argument that exists between Chris Simms, Vince Young, and McCoy as to who the best former Longhorn quarterback was in the NFL since 2000. McCoy definitely has the most longevity of the three, but Young also had two Pro Bowl appearances to his name.

Nonetheless, it’s hard to argue that any other former Longhorns quarterback in the NFL at the moment is more proven (and just overall better) than McCoy.
