Tight End

Starter: Cade Brewer

This might be the spot on the list that is most deserving of talking about what the two-deep could look like heading into Week 1 against Louisiana. Tight end is one of the more interesting position battles in the midst of fall camp right now. It looks to come down to either junior Jared Wiley or the experienced redshirt senior Cade Brewer that will be the starter in Week 1.

In terms of who will be the primary starting tight end, I will give the edge to Brewer here. But there shouldn’t be a huge split between the number of snaps that he and Wiley get this season. Brewer is definitely the more reliable blocking tight end. But he’s also been the more often-injured tight end compared to Wiley.

Brewer is bringing back 37 catches for 427 receiving yards (11.5 yards per catch) and five touchdown catches with him in 2021. Meanwhile, Brewer only has one drop in his career to date. His production is very consistent and reliable.

What Brewer also brings back with him this fall is more than 400 snaps in pass blocking and more than 200 snaps in run blocking. It’s hard for Sark and Flood to not give Brewer a look as the starter this fall. That is unless Wiley is completely blowing them away in fall camp.

We should often see Texas lining up with 21 personnel this fall, and we have from some glimpses in fall camp thus far. Expect to see multiple snaps for Texas week in and week out with both Brewer and Wiley on the field.
