Texas Football: Predicting Week 1 offensive depth chart
Quarterback
Starter: Hudson Card
If you start looking closely, you can see the writing on the wall that sophomore quarterback Hudson Card is now starting to gain a slight edge over redshirt junior Casey Thompson to be the Week 1 starter. At the outset of the offseason, it looked like Thompson held at least a slight edge over Card.
But that narrative has largely changed since neither signal-caller really established themselves as the set-in-stone starter.
Nonetheless, it was Card that got the first-team reps throughout fall practice most of this week. And most indications pointed to him as the more impressive quarterback through drills thus far in fall camp and through the first scrimmage last weekend.
No matter who the Week 1 starting quarterback is for Sark and the Longhorns, a short leash will be given at the outset. Neither Card nor Thompson is very experienced in game action, so mistakes are going to happen. That is especially true with how tough the non-conference slate is at the outset.
Card is throwing a better ball and moving around well in the pocket right now. It’s really up to Sark to see which of these two quarterbacks will execute the base of his offense at a higher and more reliable level. If the offensive line plays well this season, then Card’s skill set should give him a decent edge over Thompson for good.
