Texas Football: Troy Omeire not in initial group of starting receivers
There were some notable events that transpired on Aug. 17 concerning new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program. An initial portion of the depth chart following the first fall scrimmage came together this week. And one of the more notable parts of what we did see from this pecking order in fall camp was at the wide receiver position.
According to Inside Texas on Aug. 17 (paid content), the top three wide receivers in the first unit in practice this week were redshirt sophomore Jordan Whittington, redshirt junior Joshua Moore, and true freshman Xavier Worthy. Whittington and Moore assumed the spots on the outside, while Worthy lined up in the slot.
Maybe the most surprising of the first unit at wideout for the Longhorns in practice this week was the movement of Whittington and Worthy. The former Michigan Wolverines commit Worthy looks to get his shot to make an immediate impact this fall.
Texas football WR Troy Omeire can still get a starting spot this fall
And Whittington was largely anticipated to get the starting role out of the slot entering the regular season. But this move isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Whittington and Worthy are two of the most potent wideouts in the mix for the Longhorns this fall.
The second unit for the Longhorns this week included redshirt freshman Troy Omeire, junior Al’Vonte Woodard, and junior Kai Money. Omeire and Woodard lined up on the outside for the Longhorns, with Money on the inside.
There were many that presumed that Omeire was among the favorites to get a starting spot at one of the outside receiver positions. But he’s still working his way back from a season-ending knee injury from last year.
Omeire is still likely to get a good shot to make an impact this fall behind the trio of Worthy, Whittington, and Moore. And this is not a set-in-stone depth chart ahead of Week 1 of the regular season.
Texas is set to open up the regular season on Sep. 4 at home at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium against the Louisiana Ragin-Cajuns. Sark and the Longhorns will be looking to improve upon the 7-3 (5-3 Big 12) record under the direction of former head coach Tom Herman.
