Texas Football: 3 players that were drastically underutilized by Herman
Bijan Robinson, RB
With the lack of time that Herman had to evaluate what he had in terms of fit with his offensive scheme with each of the players on this list, it’s hard to completely fault his usage here. But it’s clear that he should’ve utilized the former elite five-star recruit and freshman breakthrough running back Bijan Robinson more than he did.
Texas started to develop a very deep backfield last fall, with the emergence of Bijan. Then sophomore running back Roschon Johnson was also a force to be reckoned with once again for the Longhorns. Even junior Keaontay Ingram contributed a good bit before fumble problems started to take hold and he eventually would miss the rest of the season.
Moreover, we really got to see what Bijan could do during the final two games of the season. Bijan might’ve been the best skill position player in the entire country through the last two games last fall. We don’t need to revisit his stat line, but it is worth noting that even in the Alamo Bowl win over the Colorado Buffaloes, Herman took Bijan out by halftime.
It’s hard to imagine how good the stat line could’ve been for Bijan had Herman played him as much as necessary throughout last season. Instead, it took until the back half of the season for Herman to finally realize that Bijan was the best running back he had in the fold. That was too late in some regard.
