Texas Football: Mack Brown thinks SEC move is ‘about the money’
Although the talk has cooled a bit of late surrounding the move for Texas football and the Oklahoma Sooners from the Big 12 to the SEC, it will still be a discussion point for the next 8-10 months. Texas and Oklahoma announced the intentions to leave the Big 12 for the SEC and got admitted with new conference membership, all within the past few weeks.
Granted, it felt like this saga started a year ago with how much news surrounded the move in this round of conference realignment.
The opinions are still rolling out, though, concerning the move for the Longhorns and Sooners from the Big 12 to the SEC. And one of the biggest voices to throw his opinion into the mix yet came out on Aug. 18. Former Texas head coach Mack Brown tossed his voice into this discussion this week, courtesy of an interview on the “Paul Finebaum Show”.
Mack Brown’s thoughts on Texas football, OU leaving for the SEC
Mack stated that he really feels this move for both Texas and Oklahoma to leave the Big 12 for the SEC is largely “about the money”. He did mention the stance that a lot of people have taken concerning this conference realignment move that the downside isn’t very worrisome for these two athletic programs in joining the SEC.
As long as the Longhorns win upon the move to the SEC, Mack mentioned that he doesn’t believe that there will be too much pressure on the likes of Texas athletic director Chris del Conte and new head coach Steve Sarkisian. But if the Longhorns and Sooners both struggle to find success in the win column upon the move to the SEC, there will be some pressure on these athletic departments.
Winning is the name of the game, and that will impact the bottom line and the overall view of this move for these two programs to spark another round of discussion in conference realignment.
Mack said it will when he noted in this interview with Finebaum that “people like you better when you win”. That will reign especially true for CDC and Sark moving forward.
Now the head coach with the North Carolina Tar Heels, Brown has experience in multiple conferences in the past three decades. Brown was the UNC head coach prior to landing the job with Texas more than 20 years ago.
Texas is set to open up the regular season on Sep. 4 at home at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium against the Louisiana Ragin-Cajuns. Sark and the Longhorns will be looking to improve upon the 7-3 (5-3 Big 12) under the former head coach Tom Herman from last season.
