Texas Football: No timeline yet for Sarkisian to name starting QB
All eyes still lie on the quarterback competition for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program, now just over two weeks away from the kickoff of the regular season opener. Texas is set to open up the regular season at home on Sep. 4 against the Louisiana Ragin-Cajuns.
And it looks like Sark will take this starting quarterback decision down to the wire in the latter days of fall camp. Texas is seeing sophomore Hudson Card and redshirt junior Casey Thompson duke it out to be the next starting quarterback.
No clear edge has emerged of late for either quarterback, especially after both didn’t do all that great in the initial fall scrimmage last weekend. Maybe this coming weekend will see one of these quarterbacks separate themselves in the all-important second fall scrimmage.
At the outset of the offseason, it was presumed that Thompson at least owned a slight edge in this quarterback battle with how well he played in the Alamo Bowl win over the Colorado Buffaloes to cap last season. But this is a new coaching regime with a new offensive scheme to implement.
And whoever can digest all of these changes under Sark’s offensive scheme will be the one who gets the start in Week 1 against Louisiana.
According to a report from Horns247 (paid content) on Aug. 18, Sark still doesn’t have a set timeline yet to figure out who will be the next starting quarterback. While Card ran with the first-team in fall practice this week, it feels like one good scrimmage from Thompson could help him regain the edge.
Sark noted that he was “disappointed” in the lack of implementation of the training for both Card and Thompson in the first fall scrimmage last weekend. But Sark also mentioned in this report that the two quarterbacks at least responded well in practice early this week.
Maybe that will lead to a more impressive outing for at least one of Card or Thompson in the second fall scrimmage this weekend.
Texas finished up last season with a record of 7-3 (5-3 Big 12) last season under former head coach Tom Herman. Sark and the Longhorns will be up and running fast this fall with a difficult non-conference schedule that features the likes of Louisiana and a road meeting with the Arkansas Razorbacks in the first two weeks.
