New Texas football offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood is hoping to take this group in the trenches to the next level this fall. Texas had up and down performances from the offensive line dating back to the first year for this program under former head coach Tom Herman, in 2017.

New head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns are hoping that the former Alabama Crimson Tide offensive line coach/award-winning assistant Flood can do better than prior positional coaches here. Texas needs more consistent results along the offensive line to help the production steady out on this side of the ball.

According to Football Outsiders, the Texas offensive line ranked just outside the top 40 FBS programs last season in line yards per carry and at No. 65 in the FBS in sack rate. Former Texas offensive line coach Herb Hand wound up netting about an average group in the trenches from his three years on the Forty Acres.

The 2018 offensive line for the Longhorns was really good, and then it took a step back in 2019. In 2020, it pretty much leveled out to become one of the middle-tier offensive lines in the Big 12. Thus, it was hard for Texas to be considered much more than a slightly above-average offensive line, at best, last fall across the college football landscape.

Flood is a much more accomplished offensive line coach heading into the fall than Texas ever had under Herman. There is the potential that Texas can elevate the play of some of the existing offensive linemen to NFL-caliber prospects as a result of the addition of Flood.

Here’s a look into three Longhorns offensive linemen that Flood should be able to help develop for the NFL starting this fall.
