The all-important second fall scrimmage occurred for the Texas football program and new head coach Steve Sarkisian on the afternoon of Aug. 10. And Texas fans were looking to see if there were any indications of what could be happening with the quarterback battle this weekend.

Although Sark didn’t officially announce any starting quarterback yet, he did note that he could essentially name who it could be if he had to with one night of sleep. That is more clarity from him as to where the timeline of the quarterback battle is in regard to naming a starter than we heard following the first fall scrimmage last weekend.

According to a report from Inside Texas following the second fall scrimmage on Aug. 21 (paid content), Sark anticipates that there could be a starter that is leaked around the media before he officially names one. That is interesting, and something that could also indicate that he’s pretty close to a decision.

And most indicators point to a much more successful second fall scrimmage this weekend from the likes of sophomore quarterback Hudson Card and redshirt junior Casey Thompson. Card took the first-team snaps in the first half of this second scrimmage, and then Thompson got the first-team reps in the second half.

Apparently, one of the sources of the improved optimism for this offense following this second scrimmage was the play of the receiving corps. Redshirt junior wide receiver Joshua Moore and true freshman Xavier Worthy were reportedly two of the best players in this scrimmage on Aug. 21.

It’s good to hear about the progress of the Texas offense as a whole in the second fall scrimmage. This is largely what we needed to hear as the Longhorns are drawing so close to the regular season opener, now just two weeks away.

Texas is set to open up the regular season on Sep. 4 at home at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium against the Louisiana Ragin-Cajuns. Sark and the Longhorns will be looking to improve upon the 7-3 (5-3 Big 12) mark that the team posted last season under former head coach Tom Herman.
