There was a lot more to be excited about from what the offense showed for Texas football in the second fall scrimmage this weekend compared to the first. New head coach Steve Sarkisian seems to have someone emerging slightly in the quarterback battle in sophomore Hudson Card.

And it looks like there’s a good developing connection between Card and one of the top Texas wideouts, redshirt junior Joshua Moore. This could be really good for Texas to have someone take command at the skill positions on offense at this point of fall camp.

Although, we still don’t have an actual answer as to who’s won the quarterback competition between Card and redshirt junior Casey Thompson. Some of the signs Card showed in the past couple of weeks in fall camp, though, could be starting to give him an edge.

According to the post-scrimmage notes from Inside Texas this weekend (paid content), there were three passing touchdowns that went between Card and Moore alone. True freshman wide receiver and former Michigan Wolverines commit Xavier Worthy was also reportedly impressive on the day, as was the third-year slot receiver Kai Money.

A Joshua Moore-Hudson Card connection is great for Texas football

What’s very encouraging for Card and this Texas offense as a whole is the fact that there’s a developing connection with a veteran wideout like Moore. As the most productive returning wideout, by a good margin now for Texas, Moore is going to play a big role in this passing game in Sark’s first year at the helm.

Card is going to have a solid target he can look to on the outside to play well off of other threats such as Worthy and the speedy redshirt sophomore Jordan Whittington.

Moore is going to be one of the starters on the outside for Sark and the Longhorns this fall. If the way the depth chart played out in fall camp thus far holds true in Week 1, he’ll be flanked by Whittington at the other outside receiver spot. Worthy is likely to be the starter out of the slot.

If this progress that Card and Thompson made in the second fall scrimmage this weekend is here to stay, then Texas should be in a good spot on the offensive side of the ball heading into the regular season opener.

Texas is set to open up the regular season slate on Sep. 4 at home at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium against the Louisiana Ragin-Cajuns. There looks to be more optimism about where the team is at two weeks ahead of the regular season opener after the second scrimmage.
