Ahead of the second fall scrimmage, this weekend, redshirt freshman Texas football wide receiver Troy Omeire suffered a familiar injury issue. A report from Horns247 this weekend confirmed that Omeire suffered a “strain to his knee” ahead of the second scrimmage which took place on the afternoon of Aug. 21.

Omeire suffered a season-ending knee injury last year, which brought what would’ve been a promising true freshman campaign to an end before it could get started. It looked like there was plenty of capability for Omeire to make an early impact last fall too.

Here’s more on what new head coach Steve Sarkisian had to say on the matter of this knee strain to Omeire this weekend.

Texas football HC Steve Sarkisian talks on this injury setback to Troy Omeire

"“He’s in the rehab process,” Sarkisian said after the scrimmage. “I don’t want to call it day-to-day, but I also don’t want to think it’s months either. I think the reality of this thing with him — it could be a week, maybe two, we’ll see, but we’re underway. We’re under the process of getting him back to 100-percent healthy and getting him back on the field.”"

It sounds like Sark and the Longhorns coaching staff are going to treat this as a week-to-week injury. This could put Omeire in danger of being limited in the regular season opener in about two weeks. But it’s too early to tell how that will officially play out.

Omeire was looking to compete for starting reps as one of the outside receivers this fall. But it looked like his progress was slow in fall camp as he’s trying to work his way back from that knee injury last year.

Now, Texas is likely to roll with redshirt junior Joshua Moore and either redshirt sophomore Jordan Whittington and redshirt freshman Kelvontay Dixon on the outside in Week 1. Moore did well in the Longhorns’ second fall scrimmage this weekend. Whittington did not get to play in this one.

Omeire should still have a chance to get some key reps for the Longhorns on the outside before the Big 12 slate begins. We’ll have to see how quickly he can work his way back from this setback, but it’s not a great sign of the injury history of Omeire.

Texas is set to open up the regular season on Sep. 4 at home at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium against the Louisiana Ragin-Cajuns. Sark and the Longhorns are still trying to figure out what the receiving corps and quarterback depth chart will look like heading into Week 1.
