Texas Football: Hudson Card starting to build more momentum in camp
It can’t be more than a few days before new Texas football head coach Steve Sarkisian draws close to naming a starting quarterback. Texas has one of the longer-running quarterback battles among the Power Five programs. Considering that Texas has roughly 10 days remaining before the start of the regular season, Sark doesn’t have much time left to make this decision.
Sark also tabbed the fact that he doesn’t want to have a two-quarterback system in Week 1. That would mean that Sark and the Longhorns need to have a quarterback decision in place in the next few days of actual fall practice.
The one quarterback that does seem to have a good bit of momentum in the quarterback battle of late is the former four-star recruit and sophomore Hudson Card. According to a report from Horns247 (paid content), Card took most of the first-team reps in practice on Aug. 24. He got to play against the second-team defense most of the way.
Texas football and Steve Sarkisian still dealing with the quarterback conundrum with Casey Thompson and Hudson Card
In the process, Card reportedly tossed one impressive deep ball for a touchdown and had a few other solid throws in redzone drills on Aug. 24. He continued that solid connection with redshirt junior wide receiver Joshua Moore again this week. That was one he established in the second fall scrimmage last weekend.
It was redshirt junior Casey Thompson and true freshman Charles Wright that split the second-team reps for most of fall practice early this week. This is not really the direction that Thompson likely wanted to be trending in at this point of fall camp.
This has to give the indication that Card is gaining at least a narrow edge over Thompson. Granted, every time it feels like we say that, it feels like another reason emerges as to why Thompson could still be named the starting quarterback.
From what we’re hearing out of fall practice, Card has the momentum swaying in his direction. Sark and the Longhorns also could have more long-term potential, in theory, with Card compared to Thompson.
Texas has a tougher non-conference schedule than most out of the gates this season. Whichever starting quarterback Sark does name for the Longhorns to start things off will have to contend with No. 23 ranked Louisiana at home on Sep. 4, and then the Arkansas Razorbacks on the road the following weekend.
