The results of late on the trail for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class are starting to look very solid. And that is thanks in large parts to the efforts of new defensive line coach Bo Davis. The latest blue-chip commit in the 2022 class came largely thanks to Davis, along with new safeties coach Blake Gideon, in the form of four-star Southaven (MS) defensive lineman Aaron Bryant.

New Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian brought Davis with him to the Forty Acres this year. This is the second stint for Davis as the Texas defensive line coach in his career as a college football and NFL positional coach. The first time that he was on staff with Texas came under former head coach Mack Brown, from 2011-2013.

Prior to taking this job with the Longhorns, Davis was the defensive line coach of the Detroit Lions in the NFL from 2018-2020. He’s also held other defensive line coach jobs with the Alabama Crimson Tide, UTSA Roadrunners, and also the Miami Dolphins in the NFL.

Yet, a lot of the success that Davis found on the recruiting trail as a defensive line coach had to do with his time at Alabama and Texas. Davis has become an elite recruiter, that also tends to pick the right guys to go after in terms of scheme fit.

Some of the top names Davis landed with the likes of Texas, Alabama, etc., on the recruiting trail includes quarterback Jalen Hurts, cornerbacks Quandre Diggs and Kendall Sheffield, edge rusher/defensive end Raekwon Davis, and defensive tackle Marcell Dareus, among others.

But the production that a lot of the top dozen recruits that Davis landed commitments from in the last 15 years is truly remarkable. That also bodes well for what Texas could get out of the trio of blue-chip defensive linemen committed in the 2022 class at the moment.

Track record speaks for itself on the recruiting trail for Texas football DL coach Bo Davis

Of some of the 10 most productive players that played along the defensive line (or at edge rusher) that Davis landed as recruits, the average career production is astonishing. Of that group of 10, they averaged more than 18 career tackles for loss in college, nine sacks, five pass breakups, and nearly one interception.

And among the top two cornerbacks that were very productive in college that Davis landed, the average production was even more impressive. Those two averaged seven career interceptions, two dozen pass breakups, four sacks, and nearly 10 tackles for loss.

It’s not fair to expect each of the three blue-chip defensive linemen in the 2022 class to turn into some type of a Quinnen Williams, Paul Boyette, Dareus, etc. But it’s hard to ignore the track record of success that Davis has put together wearing both hats as a top-tier recruiter and a solid defensive line coach.

The results speak for themselves from Davis during his time as a positional coach in college and the NFL. He recruits and develops NFL-caliber talent throughout his run as a football coach. And this is something that he’s even already accomplished in three years on staff with the Longhorns in the early 2010s.

We’ll get to see how some of the results translate on the field for the Longhorns in the trenches with the regular season opener roughly on week away. Sark, Davis, and the Longhorns are set to open up the regular season at home on Sep. 4 against the Louisiana Ragin-Cajuns.
