On the afternoon of Aug. 28, the 2021 college football season kicked off and there are two former Texas football players of note in action this weekend. One is one of the more under-the-radar Texas Exes that took his talents elsewhere this year in the UTEP Miners junior defensive lineman Troy Torres.

Torres is a former walk-on that joined the Longhorns in the fall of 2018. He never took any actual game reps with the Longhorns, but it is worth noting that he is in action with UTEP in taking on the New Mexico State Aggies on Aug. 28.

Although he might not be a starter out of the gates for UTEP this fall, Torres could compete for reps as the season moves along. He could be competing for reps this fall at one of the defensive tackle spots.

Torres will be facing the former team of a notable Longhorns transfer, in former Freshman All-American and redshirt sophomore linebacker Devin Richardson.

UTEP and New Mexico State are set to kickoff at 8:30 p.m. CT Las Cruces, NM, on Aug. 28.

Moreover, the other former Longhorn transfer in action in Week 0 around the college football landscape is the former three-star JUCO linebacker recruit and UCLA Bruins senior Caleb Johnson. There should be more on the line for Johnson this fall, as he’s likely to start at the MIKE linebacker position for the Bruins.

Johnson will be one of the upperclassmen leading the way for head coach Chip Kelly and the Bruins this fall. UCLA opens up the regular season slate on the afternoon of Aug. 28 against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors.

Extremely productive in a big role with UCLA last fall, the expectations are lofty for Johnson this season. Last season, he registered 44 combined tackles, seven tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, one interception, and one fumble recovery.

UCLA and Hawaii are set to kickoff at 2:30 p.m. CT at home for the Bruins on Aug. 28.

Texas is set to open up the regular season slate on Sep. 4 at home against the Louisiana Ragin-Cajuns. New head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns won’t be in action in Week 0, but there are some other intriguing games and Texas Exes to watch this weekend in Johnson and Torres.
