New Texas football head coach Steve Sarkisian looks to now have a starting quarterback officially in store for this team heading into the regular season opener next weekend against the No. 23 ranked Louisiana Ragin-Cajuns. Bruce Feldman of The Athletic confirmed on Aug. 28 that Texas will be running with sophomore Hudson Card as the starting quarterback in the regular season opener.

Sark and the Longhorns rode this out for a good while to name a starting quarterback ahead of Week 1 of the college football season. Although, the writing was on the wall in the last couple of weeks that Card had the momentum to be named the starting quarterback over redshirt junior Casey Thompson.

For the past couple of weeks in fall camp, the Longhorns mostly had Card getting the first-team reps. That was true of fall practice and the two scrimmages from the last two weekends.

It’s also good for Longhorns fans to have more clarity about how the skill positions will stack up heading into Week 1. The rest of the depth chart can now form together more naturally that there is clarity as to who’s the starting quarterback.

Feldman also reported that the Longhorns coaching staff is “gushing” about the skill set that Card brings to the table. Card definitely has the more natural arm talent compared to Thompson. Granted, Thompson at least has more game reps under his belt and played really well for the Longhorns in the dominant Alamo Bowl victory to cap last season.

Yet, Sark is going to bring a different offensive scheme to the table for Texas compared to former head coach Tom Herman and offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich. And that is what’s sparking a lot of the optimism for what this offense can do heading into next season.

Card and the Longhorns will definitely be challenged right away in the non-conference slate, though. Texas opens up against one of the best Group of Five programs in the entire country in No. 23 Louisiana.

And then, the Longhorns will hit the road to travel to Fayetteville to face the Arkansas Razorbacks the following weekend. While Arkansas isn’t anticipated to finish close to the top half of the SEC West standings this season, that is still a tough road trip for a new head coach and new starting quarterback that doesn’t have an official start under his belt in college yet.
