Texas Football: Sam Ehlinger out for Colts with sprained knee
Any shot that the former star Texas football quarterback Sam Ehlinger had of getting the start behind center for the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1 of the upcoming regular season was decimated this weekend. Some unfortunate injury news for the former Texas star signal-caller will derail the chance he had to maybe start in his first career NFL regular season game.
After getting off to a stellar start with the Colts in his preseason debut, in which he led the team to a fourth-quarter comeback win over the Carolina Panthers, Ehlinger isn’t in the best spot right now. He only got three passing attempts in the Colts Aug. 27 preseason win in the finale over the Detroit Lions.
Granted, Ehlinger did complete all three passing attempts for 63 yards, no passing touchdowns, and obviously no picks.
A report from Adam Schefter on Aug. 28, though, indicates that the Colts are likely to be without Ehlinger for the next five or six weeks as he recovers from a knee sprain he suffered this weekend. The Colts will reportedly roll with the former Georgia Bulldogs and Washington Huskies quarterback Jacob Eason as the Week 1 starter if Carson Wentz is still recovering from foot surgery.

Eason was solid for the Colts in this double-digit preseason finale win over the Lions. He had one of his most efficient outings of the preseason in three appearances in this win over the Lions. Eason completed 10 of 14 passing attempts for 74 yards, no passing touchdowns, and no picks.
It’s also good for the Colts, if Eason is the Week 1 starter in the regular season, that he didn’t turn the ball over for the second straight preseason game.
Moreover, Ehlinger still established himself as a true NFL-caliber quarterback, even if it is in a backup role at the outset of his career, in the preseason action he did get this year. We’ll see what type of workload head coach Frank Reich gives Ehlinger with the Colts for the rest of the season.
The Colts are set to open up the regular season on Sep. 12 with a difficult matchup at home at Lucas Oil Stadium against the Seattle Seahawks. But the Colts will be without their sixth-round pick from the 2021 NFL Draft Ehlinger in that game.
