Texas football fans got to hear from some of the players in media availability this week ahead of the highly-anticipated regular season opener on Sep. 4 at home against the No. 23 ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns. New head coach Steve Sarkisian is a little more than two days away from getting ready for kickoff with No. 21 ranked Texas against a tough Louisiana squad.

In media availability with some of the more notable Longhorns players this week, redshirt junior defensive tackle Keondre Coburn gave some noteworthy statements. Coburn specifically talked about how he feels about this coming season as a whole and his new head coach.

It sounded like Coburn has the confidence that he could lead the team in sacks this fall. That would come despite him playing essentially at the nose tackle position for new co-defensive coordinators/linebackers coaches Pete Kwiatkowski and Jeff Choate.

Coburn noted in his statements this week that he feels that Sark is a “very humble, and very honest person”. He also mentioned that if you work hard then you will get your opportunity to shine with Sark, noting that the new head coach keeps things pretty simple and straightforward.

The Texas defensive line should be really strong this fall. Texas boasts the likes of Coburn, senior Moro Ojomo, former LSU Tigers senior transfer Ray Thornton, and former JUCO transfer Jacoby Jones, to man the trenches at least in the season opener against Louisiana this weekend.

This will be a major first test for Sark as the Longhorns look to get off on the right foot this fall. Texas should be strong on the defensive side of the ball, though, against senior quarterback Levi Lewis and a very experienced Cajuns team.

What Coburn brings back for the Longhorns this fall is more than 50 career combined tackles, nine tackles for loss, three sacks, two pass breakups, and one forced fumble. We’ll see if Coburn can stay healthy this fall, though, as he has yet to play in a double-digit number of games in his three years playing for Texas to date.

Texas will open up the regular season at home on Sep. 4 against Louisiana, with kick-off time set for 3:30 p.m. CT, televised on FOX. This will be the first game since the Longhorns finished up the 2020 season with a dominant Alamo Bowl win over the Colorado Buffaloes.
