Early success out of the gates this fall for new head coach Steve Sarkisian could do wonders for the 2022 and 2023 Texas football recruiting classes. Texas found a real spark on the recruiting trail in the past week, specifically along the defensive line, in the 2022 class. Sark and his staff are on fire on the recruiting trail right now, and we’ll see how long this momentum can last for.

Just within the past week, the Longhorns gained commitments in the 2022 class from a trio of blue-chip defensive linemen. That trio of blue-chip commits include four-star Southaven (MS) product Aaron Bryant, Ascension Catholic (LA) edge rusher J’mond Tapp, and Marlin’s (TX) Jaray Bledsoe.

Texas is in a good spot on the recruiting trail for the 2022 class heading into the fall.

Yet, there still seems to be an emphasis that the Texas coaching staff is placing on flipping key commits this fall. According to a report from Mike Roach of Horns247 on Sep. 1 (paid content), Texas is still keeping lines of communication open with two commits of other schools heading into the fall.

These two key targets that got away from Texas, but that the staff is still keeping contact with, are three-star Duncanville interior offensive lineman Cameron Williams and four-star West Brook (TX) safety Bryce Anderson. Williams gave his commitment to the Oregon Ducks back on July 1, and Anderson committed to the Texas A&M Aggies on Aug. 6.

Of these two commits that Texas lost out on in the past two months, Anderson looks to be of the utmost importance. It’s easy to say that the three commits of other schools that Texas should prioritize the most heading into the fall are four-star athlete Larry Turner-Gooden, Anderson, and five-star offensive tackle Kelvin Banks.

Turner-Gooden is currently committed to the Arizona State Sun Devils. And Banks joined Williams in surprising Texas and Texas A&M by committing to Oregon back in July.

Moreover, Anderson was a top target at the safety position for the 2022 class for the Longhorns for a good while. Texas A&M and head coach Jimbo Fisher made a late run to get his commitment over the likes of the Alabama Crimson Tide, LSU Tigers, and the Longhorns.

Texas has new safeties coach Blake Gideon and cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph still as the top recruiters pursuing Anderson. Those efforts should continue in the three or four months ahead of the Early Signing Period in mid-December.

Texas is now up to 20 commits in the 2022 class, after landing that key trio of blue-chip defensive linemen in the past week. According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class now ranks at No. 6 in the nation and in the top spot in the Big 12 ahead of the Oklahoma Sooners.
