Texas Football: 4 overreactions after decisive win over No. 23 UL
Bijan Robinson will be a Heisman finalist
On a more positive note, you can’t not be excited about what the Longhorns are going to get out of the star sophomore running back Bijan Robinson this fall. Coming into this season, Bijan had the hype of a Heisman contender among running backs. But to remain a Heisman contender throughout the season, Bijan needed to come out of the gates with a strong performance.
Bijan definitely did a lot to boost his status as a Heisman contender this fall with a great performance in Week 1. His box score stats were great. Bijan registered 103 rushing yards on 20 carries (north of five yards per carry), one rushing touchdown, 73 receiving yards on four catches (north of 18 yards per catch), and one touchdown catch.
Registering more than 170 total yards from scrimmage and two total scores in the regular season opener was an impressive showing from a star that looks like someone that could be a Heisman finalist.
Some of the other stats and metrics for Bijan further show the huge impact he made on this game. Including the offensive line (which we’ll get to later), Bijan registered the best pass blocking grade for the Longhorns. He also gave the Longhorns six first downs, three rushes of at least 10 yards, more than 110 yards after contact, and 10 missed tackles forced.
Bijan was as advertised, if not better, for the Longhorns in the regular season opener. He played a huge role in this win over Louisiana and contributed in almost every facet of the game on offense.
By comparison, here were the performances of the other four top running backs in the Heisman odds this week.
- Tank Bigsby (Auburn): 138 total yards (9.9 yards per touch), 2 TDs
- Breece Hall (Iowa State): 100 total yards (3.7 yards per touch), 1 TD
- Brian Robinson Jr. (Alabama): 60 total yards (4.2 yards per touch), 0 TDs
- Kyren Williams (Notre Dame): TBD (ND faces Florida State on Sep. 5)
