In the second game of the regular season, new head coach Steve Sarkisian and No. 15 ranked Texas football are set to take on a longtime foe in the Arkansas Razorbacks. This will be the first time since the conclusion of the 2014 season that Texas will face the SEC West foe Arkansas.
This meeting between Texas and Arkansas has a lot of implications on the line for both teams. It is interesting to see how this game will play out given the future move of the Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners from the Big 12 to the SEC.
And the impact that this win could have for the momentum of each rising football program is monumental.
In Week 1, Sark and the Longhorns took on an experienced and proven team in the No. 23 ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns. And Texas got the best of head coach Billy Napier’s Ragin’ Cajuns by the final score of 38-18. It was a surprising, but very positive effort that Texas put out on the field in the regular season opener.
Meanwhile, Arkansas is coming off a big win of its own in Week 1. Arkansas didn’t face as tough of an opponent as the Longhorns. But a big second half effort netted the Razorbacks a 38-17 win over the Rice Owls out of Conference-USA.
As of the late afternoon of Sep. 8, Texas is a one-touchdown (and extra-point) favorite in the spread over Arkansas. And the ESPN matchup predictor (based on the Football Power Index) gives Texas a 67 percent chance to beat Arkansas this weekend.

Injured Texas football players
As of the afternoon of Sep. 8, the Longhorns have two injuries of note. The first is the lower-body injury that junior guard Junior Angilau suffered in the win over Louisiana. Angilau is being monitored throughout the week in practice, but is the starter on the depth chart at right guard this weekend.
It will be big for the Longhorns to have Angilau back against an experienced Arkansas defense. The Texas offensive line wasn’t very good in the regular season opener, and it couldn’t really afford to lose Angilau.
We could also hear more from Sark on the availability of Angilau in a remaining press conference before the weekend.
More up in the air is the status of junior tight end Jared Wiley. Dealing with a nagging shoulder injury since the end of fall camp, Wiley could be limited against the Hogs. The news for Wiley with this shoulder injury for the past week or so was mixed. This will be injury news that we continue to monitor heading into the Arkansas game.
Last but not least, the status of redshirt freshman wide receiver Troy Omeire still largely appears to be up in the air as he works his way back from a knee injury. We will also continue to monitor his status for any updates that come along.
Picking Texas football vs. Arkansas
The betting line for the Arkansas game is about as close as it was heading into the regular season opener against Louisiana. Texas is roughly a one-possession favorite, depending on what point you look at the betting line.
The key for Texas in this game will once again be to get the ground game going early and often. Standout linebacker Bumper Pool will be out for the Hogs in the first half as he’ll serve the rest of his suspension from a targeting call in the second half of the win over Rice. That will be a big opportunity for Texas to get star running back Bijan Robinson going early.
If Texas can establish some type of ground game and overall offensive rhythm early, that should help the confidence of both quarterback Hudson Card and the offensive line.
