Texas Football: Texas Tech to remain a future opponent for Longhorns
Upon the move for the Texas football program from the Big 12 to the SEC in the coming years (we have yet to see how this timeline will play out), it will be interesting to see which opponents from this conference hang around on the schedule. Texas will still get to face the Oklahoma Sooners year in and year out, with both schools leaving the Big 12 for the SEC.
Yet, of the remaining eight schools in the Big 12, which will the Longhorns keep on the schedule in the future?
According to a report from Chip Brown of Horns247 this weekend, the Texas Tech Red Raiders will remain on the Longhorns’ future non-conference schedules, whenever those alterations are made. Texas athletic director Chris del Conte and Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt are looking to make this arrangement work over a reported 20-25 year period at least.
It’s unclear what this agreement between Texas and Texas Tech would look like in terms of the frequency of matchups on the future non-conference schedules. But it is good to hear that the Longhorns and Red Raiders can continue this in-state rivalry in future seasons.
Texas football and Texas Tech will reportedly keep facing each other in future non-conference schedules
Texas Tech would certainly be one of the more interesting future opponents to keep on the schedule out of the eight remaining schools in the Big 12 once Texas and Oklahoma depart for the SEC. Some other possible future opponents that would be interesting to keep on some non-conference schedules out of the Big 12 are the Baylor Bears, TCU Horned Frogs, and Oklahoma State Cowboys.
Texas and Texas Tech have faced each other 70 times in the history of this rivalry. And Texas owns the matchup with a record of 53-17. Texas also owns a three-game winning streak in this series with Texas Tech heading into this season.
Heading into Week 2 of the 2021 college football season, Texas owns a record of 1-0 following a win over the No. 23 ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns in the opener. Meanwhile, Texas Tech knocked off a future Big 12 foe in the Houston Cougars in the regular season opener last weekend.
