Casey Thompson has ended the quarterback battle

The talk of the town for the Longhorns football program throughout the rest of the weekend following this bad loss to Arkansas will remain the resurging quarterback battle. Sark and the Longhorns were forced to pull sophomore Hudson Card in the second half for redshirt junior Casey Thompson at a time that was too late to matter on the scoreboard.

Thompson did provide a spark for this Longhorns’ offense, though, that should be something that allows him to get the start in Week 3 at home against the Rice Owls. Card did not look good in a bright spotlight, which would not bode well for the Longhorns when the team is on a stage like that of the Red River Rivalry and on the road against teams like the TCU Horned Frogs.

The positive outing for Card did not prove to be something that could allow him to carry momentum into this critical meeting with the former Southwest Conference foe Arkansas.

Thompson showed a lot of the positives in this game that we saw from him when he took over for Sam Ehlinger in the Alamo Bowl victory to round out last season over the Colorado Buffaloes. He was much more efficient through the air and on the ground. Thompson also led Texas to two straight touchdown drives when taking over for Card in the second half.

The only touchdown drive that Card led in a double-digit number of attempts was after a big interception from senior safety BJ Foster. Card looked to have the jitters at a time where he needed to be calm and collected.
