A big and humbling loss for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and No. 15 ranked Texas football at the hands of the former Southwest Conference foe Arkansas Razorbacks and head coach Sam Pittman puts things in perspective for this program. Texas went into this meeting with longtime rival Arkansas as roughly a one-touchdown favorite ahead of kickoff.

This 19-point loss to the Razorbacks on the road on the night of Sep. 11 was something that largely shocked the college football landscape. With all that was on the line for both teams in this game, it was figured to be closer than what we saw out on the field at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium this weekend.

Media reactions were swift to this loss for the Longhorns. But one of the more surprising and calm reactions to the loss to Arkansas came from noted SEC homer and college football media personality Paul Finebaum of the “Paul Finebaum Show”.

Finebaum mentioned that he essentially got lost in the energy of the crowd in Fayetteville in this game between Texas and Arkansas. Although most thought Texas would pull this game out in the end (in terms of the pregame predictions), Finebaum said that he thought the crowd would play a bigger role in the result.

Paul Finebaum still high on Texas football moving to the SEC after loss to Arkansas

It was also interesting to hear what Finebaum had to say about the Longhorns upon the move with the Oklahoma Sooners from the Big 12 to the SEC in reaction to this loss to Arkansas. He noted that he still feels like Sark and the Longhorns “will be ready” for the move to the SEC by the time this program starts actually competing in that conference.

This loss to Arkansas signaled that the rebuild of this football program under Sark will take longer than we thought following the solid season-opening win over the No. 23 ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns.

It will take time for Sark to get his culture and players set with this program. It won’t happen overnight, but that’s still not a great excuse for the humbling loss to the Hogs in Week 2. Texas has to respond well ahead of the start of Big 12 play next weekend.

Texas has one game remaining now in the non-conference slate before Big 12 play begins. Next weekend, Texas will return home to the friendly confines of DKR to face the Rice Owls out of Conference-USA on Sep. 18. That is the last game in non-conference play before the Big 12 opener against the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Sep. 25.
