Xavier Worthy

Another wideout for Texas that didn’t make much of an impact at all in the first two games this season is the electric true freshman Xavier Worthy. There were three plays in the first two games where we could really see what Worthy can do. But other than that, Worthy wasn’t targeted all that much.

This is also a wide receiver in Worthy that didn’t have a single drop in the first two weeks. That’s more on the quarterback for not getting the ball to Worthy on a number of chances where he was open.

Through the first two games of the season, Worthy came down with three catches for 75 yards and no touchdowns. Two of those catches, and 41 of his 75 receiving yards, came in the loss to Arkansas. But there were some key misses when Card tried to target Worthy down the field. Worthy was also open on a number of other occasions where Card was not able to find him.

The one that sticks out among the misses for Card in the passing game when he was looking for Worthy was when he tossed the ball too far right for the freshman wideout to catch up. It seemed like Card was pulling the ball all game long, leading to key misses to Moore, Worthy, and redshirt sophomore Jordan Whittington alike.

With Worthy looking to get the start on the outside again next weekend against Rice, something has to give. Worthy has run clean routes, caught pretty much every catchable ball thrown his way, and has the speed to take the top off of opposing defenses. Thompson should give Worthy more of a chance to breakout in a big way in the next few games.
