A humbled, yet motivated, attitude seemed to run rampant so far this week for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program when talking to the media. And that feels appropriate given the humbling and unexpected convincing loss at the hands of the Arkansas Razorbacks and head coach Sam Pittman back on Sep. 11, by the final score of 40-21.

Texas couldn’t get much of anything going against the Razorbacks last weekend, en route to one of the worst non-conference road losses in recent memory. Fans on the Forty Acres couldn’t shake the feeling of this loss under Sark compared to similar ones under former head coaches Tom Herman and Charlie Strong.

Patience must still win the day, but Texas must respond strong in the next two games.

Texas has a very winnable game where Sark’s team can get back on track against the final non-conference opponent of the regular season in the Rice Owls out of Conference-USA. As a 26-point favorite this week, a few days ahead of kickoff against Rice, this should be a time when the Longhorns can get some momentum back in their favor ahead of the start of Big 12 play.

It was interesting to hear from the likes of redshirt junior quarterback and the newly named starter Casey Thompson, and senior linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, this week following the loss to Arkansas. Those two key Longhorns players spoke in media availability this week.

Overshown specifically had his mind on finding a way to right the ship following a really bad outing for the defensive front against an upstart Arkansas offense. Overshown himself missed four tackles in this game, and it was one of the worst outings of his career since moving to linebacker officially a few years ago.

He mentioned in media availability this week that the “defensive front didn’t do our job” against Arkansas. While that is obvious, it fits a theme of recognition reality in order to find the right path to move forward for the Longhorns.

And it wasn’t just the defense that was an issue for Texas last weekend. The offense didn’t have much of any rhythm until Thompson took over for Hudson Card at quarterback. We’ll see what it can do for the Texas offense with Thompson starting this weekend.

Texas will carry a record of 1-1 into this meeting with Rice this weekend following the 19-point loss to Arkansas on the road on Sep. 11. Kickoff time between Rice and Texas is set for 7 p.m. CT at DKR on Sep. 18.
