For most of this cycle thus far, the top linebacker target for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class was the elite five-star Cy Park product Harold Perkins. The nation’s top ranked linebacker prospect would be a huge get for new co-defensive coordinators/linebackers coaches Pete Kwiatkowski and Jeff Choate.

But the Longhorns aren’t in the most favorable position with the uber-talented in-state product Perkins of late. Texas looks to have fallen behind key competitors in the race to land a commitment from Perkins like the in-state rival Texas A&M Aggies and LSU Tigers.

Granted, Perkins is down to around five or six schools at this point of his recruitment, and Texas is one of them. Texas, Texas A&M, LSU, etc., are going to be in a dog fight in the months leading up to National Signing Day to try and ultimately win over the commitment of Perkins.

Texas football getting an abrupt visit this weekend from 5-Star LB Harold Perkins

Texas does have some good news on the way for this weekend with Perkins, though. According to a report from Horns247 (paid content) on Sep. 17, Perkins is set to take a visit to Austin this weekend following his high school football game on Sep. 18.

Perkins reportedly was planning to visit Texas A&M this weekend for their game against the New Mexico Lobos at Kyle Field in College Station, but his high school game changed to move closer to the Forty Acres. This lines up well in the end for Texas if the atmosphere is good at DKR as the Longhorns take on the Rice Owls on the night of Sep. 18.

Proving to Perkins that Texas is both a good fit for him schematically, and that this program is rising to new heights under Sark and his coaching staff, is something that has to be done to win over his interests. Perkins looks to have a lot of interest in Texas A&M at the moment, and this visit could be a shot for Texas to turn the tide in his recruitment.

Texas has new special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks and cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph as the top recruits going after Perkins. To win over his commitment, Banks and Joseph will have to beat out the likes of LSU linebackers coach Blake Baker and Texas A&M linebackers coach Tyler Santucci.
