Struggles of the Rice quarterbacks

Whether it is McCaffrey or Green, Rice can’t get much of anything going in the passing game. And with new co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Pete Kwiatkowski knowing that he should be able to easily turn the Rice offense one-dimensional should give this Texas defense a big edge.

McCaffrey and Green have combined for two passing touchdowns and six interceptions in the first two games of the season. It doesn’t look like it’s about to get much better for the Owls either. In his three seasons playing for the Owls, Green has tallied up 21 turnover-worthy plays (which is a huge number given the lack of total passing attempts in that span of time).

Meanwhile, McCaffrey has six turnover-worthy plays over the course of the last two seasons with Rice and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Whether it is McCaffrey or Green that gets the call for most of the dropbacks in this meeting with Texas, Kwiatkowski’s secondary should be able to take advantage.

The passing game in general for Rice isn’t very good so far this season. Rice had four drops in the first two games of the season, so it’s not just the fault of the quarterbacks for the lack of potency in this phase of the offense.

Rice doesn’t have much of a rushing attack either, averaging a little over 100 rushing yards per game and less than three yards per carry through two games.
