One of the biggest visitors that is a key target of the 2022 Texas football recruiting class over the weekend from the win for new head coach Steve Sarkisian over the Rice Owls was the four-star Spearman (TX) wide receiver Brenen Thompson. Texas got a dominant win over Rice last weekend, to the tune of a 58-0 defeat at home at DKR.

And Thompson was the main official visitor that had eyes on him over the weekend among key targets of the Longhorns 2022 class. He was the lone official visitor among 2022 blue-chip recruits last weekend too.

This was also Thompson’s first visit, official or unofficial, since the regular season opener for the Oklahoma State Cowboys in a win over the FCS Missouri State Bears back on Sep. 4. Thompson still looks to take a visit with the in-state rival Texas A&M Aggies this fall too.

According to a report from Horns247 on Sep. 20 (paid content), Thompson had a successful official visit with Texas over the weekend. And it reportedly sounds like he grows closer with the coaching staff each interaction he has with them.

Texas looks to sit in a really good position with Thompson this fall. The timing here could be excellent for the Longhorns since it might not be too long before Thompson announces his decision.

This Horns247 report also mentioned that Thompson is likely to have a decision in store at least a month ahead of the Early Signing Period.

Texas still needs to worry about Oklahoma State and Texas A&M in the race to land Thompson’s commitment. Texas, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma State are the three finalist schools in his recruitment at this point.

What apparently impressed Thompson over the weekend was the performance from some of the top skill position players for the Longhorns and how much attention the program gave him as a whole. Since Thompson was the lone official visitor among blue-chip recruits over the weekend, he was able to get the full attention and energy of the coaching staff outside of the game itself.

The way that Sark and the Longhorns were able to utilize the former Michigan Wolverines commit and freshman wide receiver Xavier Worthy likely went a long way to gaining the full attention of Thompson.

Texas does hold a commitment from one blue-chip wide receiver in the 2022 class, with four-star Lewisville product Armani Winfield. But the two top wide receiver targets of the Longhorns 2022 class at this point of the cycle have to be Thompson and five-star Frisco-Liberty product Evan Stewart.
