Although this news was expected to come down from new Texas football head coach Steve Sarkisian this week ahead of the Big 12 opener, it was confirmed early this week who the starting quarterback will be this coming weekend. Texas is set to take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders at home late in the morning of Sep. 25 to open up Big 12 play.

And it will be redshirt junior Casey Thompson getting the start at quarterback over sophomore Hudson Card for the second straight week. This will be the second career start for Thompson too, as his first came in the Longhorns’ dominant 58-point win over the Rice Owls last weekend at home.

In the win over Rice, Card did get some reps in the second half. He went 2-of-3 passing for 29 passing yards, no touchdowns, and no picks. He also had one scramble for two rushing yards and no touchdowns on the ground. This was the second straight game for Card where he registered less than 70 passing yards and no total touchdowns.

At least he didn’t turn the ball over at all against Rice, though.

Thompson was the better of the two quarterbacks that played in both the win over Rice and the loss two weekends ago to the Arkansas Razorbacks on the road. In the win over Rice, he completed 15-of-18 passes for 164 yards, two passing touchdowns, one interception, and had two rushes for seven yards and no rushing scores.

Texas football not guaranteeing any reps vs. Tech for Hudson Card over Casey Thompson

Even that one pick that Thompson tossed in the win over Rice came while he was under a lot of pressure. Thompson was hit while in his throwing motion, causing the ball to float on him and get knocked way off course right into the hands of a Rice defensive back.

Moreover, in media availability this week, Sark talked on the quarterback situation for the Big 12 opener against Texas Tech this weekend. He mentioned that he likes the developments he’s seen from Thompson in the last two games, and in practice.

Sark also noted that the plan isn’t to guarantee any reps for Card this weekend. He did say that it would be nice for Card to get reps, but that will hinge on the game situation in the second half. If Texas is close with Texas Tech, don’t expect to see Card get any reps in this game.

There really isn’t any reason why the Longhorns would need to give Card reps in a big game like this one against Texas Tech. Thompson has momentum on his side, and he’s looked good since he took over for Card in the loss to Arkansas back on Sep. 11.

Next. 3 adjustments Sark must make before Big 12 play. dark
