Texas football and new head coach Steve Sarkisian have an important battle looming in the Big 12 opener this weekend against head coach Matt Wells and the seemingly improved Texas Tech Red Raiders. In really the second at least decently challenging opposition from the Power Five that Texas has faced this season, Texas Tech won’t be an easy game to win to start off the Big 12 slate.

We will see the second career start for redshirt junior quarterback Casey Thompson for the Longhorns against Tech this weekend. Thompson got his first career start in a dominant win for the Longhorns last weekend at home over the Rice Owls, by the final score of 58-0.

It doesn’t sound like Sark is planning on giving sophomore quarterback Hudson Card any reps in this game, unless the situation calls for it.

Texas comes into this game sporting a record of 2-1, following the win over Rice. The Longhorns also have a win over Louisiana from the opener and that bad road loss to Arkansas from two weekends ago.

Texas currently holds a three-game winning streak over Texas Tech, dating back to the 2017 season. And the all-time record that Texas has over Texas Tech sits at 53-17-0.

Entering this game, Texas is just over a one-possession favorite over Texas Tech, with the spread sitting in the Longhorns favor at nine-points. And the over/under is set at 62 points. The ESPN matchup predictor (based on the Football Power Index) gives Texas nearly a 78 percent chance to beat Texas Tech.

Here’s a look at the live stream, kick off time, pick for the game, and more as Texas takes on Texas Tech in their Big 12 opener on Sep. 25.

Injured Texas football players

Two of the same injuries of note for the Longhorns are cornerback Jahdae Barron and wide receiver Troy Omeire. Both Omeire and Barron were ruled out for this game against Texas Tech, and missed last week’s meeting with Rice.

We’ll have to wait at least another week to get that pairing of up and coming Longhorns talents back in the mix. Barron showed promise in the first two games in the defensive backfield this season. And Omeire is still waiting to make his Longhorns debut in his second year on campus.

Moreover, the new injury update for the Longhorns this week involves former four-star recruit and freshman cornerback Ishmael Ibraheem. Although he wasn’t expected to get significant reps against Texas Tech this weekend, Ibraheem is out as he has a knee injury that he suffered in the win over Rice.

Missing both Barron and Ibraheem still hampers the Longhorns depth in the secondary.

Last but not least, it is significant to note that Texas Tech could have standout sophomore running back Tahj Brooks limited this weekend. A late report this week surfaced showing that Brooks injured himself this week and his status is in doubt for this key Big 12 meeting.

Picking Texas football vs. Rice

This will be the first real test for the Longhorns since the humbling road loss to the Razorbacks two weekends ago. If Texas can get off to a hot start against Texas Tech, which should be doable given Tech’s regular slow start this season, then gaining control of this game could be in hand by halftime.

Thompson has continually played well when given the chance for Texas since the Alamo Bowl win last season over Colorado. Expect Thompson and star sophomore running back Bijan Robinson to get off to a quick start here. Texas Tech will challenge in the second half, but a limited (or missing) Brooks will hurt them too much to overcome in the end.

Final score prediction: Texas-40, Texas Tech-34
