Texas is exposed on the deep pass

If there was one significant weakness exposed on this Texas defense by an offensive coordinator that knows the Big 12 really well, in the former TCU Horned Frogs OC Sonny Cumbie, it was getting beat over the top. Texas gave up a handful of deep passing plays that went for touchdowns, and a lot of them went against senior cornerback D’Shawn Jamison.

Throughout his time on the Forty Acres, Jamison was one of the best cornerbacks in the last half-decade or so for the Longhorns. But Jamison is off to a shaky start this season where he’s got beat over the top on multiple occasions now. He also just hasn’t made the same plays were used to seeing him make in pass coverage.

Jamison got beat deep by some different wideouts too, all while backup quarterback Henry Colombi was in for the Red Raiders. Texas Tech had three touchdown passes that went for at least 40 yards. And all of those passing plays came after Colombi took over for the injured starting Tech quarterback Tyler Shough.

This is an adjustment that we’ll have to see both Jamison and new co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Pete Kwiatkowski make before Texas takes on TCU next weekend. Texas is facing a quarterback next week in Max Duggan that can also hit the deep ball more effectively than any of the three quarterbacks the Longhorns faced in non-conference play.
