Texas Football: Tyler Shough leaves game with injury for Texas Tech
A good start for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program also got off to a really unfortunate beginning for head coach Matt Wells and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Texas got off to a hot start against a Red Raiders offense that is also increasingly banged up, already without standout sophomore running back Tahj Brooks in this game.
Texas Tech is now also without the former Oregon Ducks transfer and starting quarterback Tyler Shough, as he exited the game at an inopportune time for the Red Raiders. He injured his hand after throwing a pick-six to senior cornerback Josh Thompson in the second quarter of this game.
After handing the Longhorns their first defensive touchdown in a few years, Shough went to the locker room for the Red Raiders. That put the game in the hands of the former Utah State Aggies signal-caller and transfer Henry Colombi for Texas Tech.
Texas Tech sees starting QB Tyler Shough exit vs. Texas football
Coming in with only one passing attempt on the season so far, this was a tough spot for Colombi to get thrown into. He turned the ball over on downs on his first drive of the game for the Red Raiders. But a nice throw from Colombi on the second drive for Tech did show a nice bounce-back for the senior transfer.
Moreover, this is big news for Texas Tech that Shough left the game. He’s played well for a new-look Texas Tech offense early in the season under first-year former TCU Horned Frogs offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie.
We will continue to monitor this developing storyline for the Red Raiders as Wells and his squad takes on the Longhorns at DKR in Austin. Prior to exiting this game, Shough had one interception and one rushing touchdown.
Shough came into this game with just over 800 passing yards, six passing touchdowns, two picks, and one rushing score. We’ll see how Colombi is able to do leading this Texas Tech offense.
Texas led the game 28-7 when Shough left this game, and the scoring continued after he went to the locker room. Colombi had one passing touchdown, and Casey Thompson found Xavier Worthy for a score to make it 35-14 just before halftime.
