Texas Football: Evan Stewart opts out of season after spat with coaches
A busy week in the news cycle surrounding some top targets of the 2022 Texas football recruiting, especially now including the elite five-star Frisco-Liberty wide receiver Evan Stewart. Just as it looked like Stewart could have a truly insane senior season for Liberty High School in Frisco, TX, he decided to opt out of the rest of this campaign.
The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex product announced on social media on Sep. 28 that he would be opting out of the rest of his senior season. And further 247Sports reports indicate that there was a short suspension after Stewart had a disagreement with his coaching staff that helped to push this decision to come down this week.
Stewart had also missed the past few games for Frisco-Liberty, so this decision might not be all that surprising when we look back at it a few years down the line.
Opting out of senior seasons of high school football has become a lot more commonplace for top prospects in this 2022 recruiting cycle. Stewart is just the latest big name out of the state of Texas to do so.

Four-star Texas running back commit and Klein Cain product Jaydon Blue opted out of the entirety of his senior season in high school. And while it appears that Blue will stick out a lot of his senior year of high school academically, the expectation is that he will enroll early on the Forty Acres for spring ball.
Moreover, another high-profile opt out for high school football in the DFW-Metroplex among a 2022 prospect (at least he was at one time) is the former elite five-star Southlake Carroll quarterback Quinn Ewers. But Ewers opted out of the entirety of his senior year of high school at Southlake Carroll and reclassified to the 2021 class to enroll this fall at Ohio State.
Stewart’s recruitment is still a very hot topic of discussion this fall. But now it looks like he will have more time to consider the visit process without the high school football season taking up some of his time.
Texas is looking to get Stewart officially booked for a visit during the weekend of the Big 12 matchup against the Oklahoma State Cowboys at home, on Oct. 16.
All in all, this is becoming the reality of the world we are living in with the new NIL rules and with more emphasis on player empowerment. That is now extending from the college ranks, all the way down to some of the top high school prospects.
Texas once held the commitment of Stewart in their 2022 class for about one month back in part of February and March. He ranks as the nation’s No. 3 2022 high school prospect, and the top overall wide receiver and prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).
