Texas Football: 3 weaknesses Sarkisian can exploit vs. TCU
Use Casey Thompson’s drive efficiency to exploit a prone TCU defense
Scoring drives have become a real stat to measure the effectiveness of the breakthrough redshirt junior quarterback Casey Thompson since the dominant Alamo Bowl win over the Colorado Buffaloes last season. It is very rare that Thompson doesn’t lead the Longhorns on a scoring drive. That really only happened once last weekend for Texas in the big 35-point win over Texas Tech.
And one of the major weaknesses of the TCU defense is the inability to stop teams once they get inside their own 40-yard line. TCU has allowed the opposition to get within their own 40-yard line 11 times this season. And they average 5.1 yards per scoring opportunity, per collegefootballdata.com. That is way over the Big 12 average this season.
Meanwhile, Texas has an incredible 21 scoring opportunities so far this season. Most of those came under Thompson’s guidance behind center. Texas averages 5.5 points per scoring opportunity too.
What Thompson showed against Texas Tech is that when this offense is in rhythm, it’s really difficult to stop this group more than even 20-25 percent of the time. Thompson shouldn’t try to force plays, but he’s got the weapons to put up some points against TCU this weekend.
