Texas Football: 3 problematic Frogs players for the Longhorns
Ochaun Mathis, DE
It is clear who some of the most productive players are on this TCU defense. TCU has two spark plugs to this defensive front that both can come off the edge with ferocity. The first of this standout edge duo for the Horned Frogs is former New Mexico State defensive end/edge rusher and senior Dylan Horton.
The other piece to this standout edge duo for TCU is also the final player on this list, redshirt junior defensive end Ochaun Mathis. In the two and a half seasons or so for Mathis, he’s registered two-dozen tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, nearly 100 combined tackles, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
Moreover, Mathis is the highest-graded defensive player for the Horned Frogs through three games. He’s registered an impressive six stops, eight quarterback pressures, one sack, two tackles for loss, and one quarterback hit. Even better for Mathis is that he hasn’t missed a single tackle for the Horned Frogs this season.
The good news for Texas is that Mathis wasn’t really his usual self, statistically at least, in the last few matchups against this team for TCU. He still has yet to register a single sack against the Longhorns in his career. Texas is one of two Big 12 schools that Mathis has one tackle for loss or fewer against in his career, and no sacks. The other is Oklahoma.
The 6-foot-5 and 250-pound Mathis is a true force to be reckoned with coming off the edge for the Horned Frogs. And he’s likely to face redshirt senior right tackle Derek Kerstetter on most of his snaps. Kerstetter has faced Mathis before, but not often at the right tackle position. It’s mostly been another one of his teammates at right tackle when he played at other positions in the last few years.
