Texas Football: Josh Thompson out with concussion vs. TCU

This is a really bad week of injury news for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program ahead of the key meeting in the Big 12 with head coach Gary Patterson and the stingy TCU Horned Frogs. Texas already had the news break this week that a pair of wideouts had injury updates come down.

Although it looks like Sark and the Longhorns will have redshirt junior wide receiver Joshua Moore for the TCU game this weekend, it’s not as fortunate for redshirt freshman Troy Omeire. Texas fans are going to have to wait a lot longer to see the former blue-chip recruit and outside receiver Omeire make his college debut.

But more bad news arrived heading into the weekend courtesy of a report from Horns247 (paid content) stating that Texas will be without senior cornerback Josh Thompson. This report states that Texas will be without Thompson due to a concussion he suffered in practice this week.

This is just an unfortunate week of injuries for the Longhorns players in practice. Moore came down with a reported ankle injury earlier this week. And now we know about Thompson with this concussion when this Texas secondary really needs him against a talented TCU receiving corps.

TCU boasts the likes of wide receivers Quentin Johnston, Taye Barber, JD Spielman, and Derius Davis. It is mainly Johnston and Barber that the Longhorns have to worry about in the passing game for the Horned Frogs.

Texas will now likely have former McNeese State grad transfer and senior cornerback Darion Dunn taking the reps in place of Thompson. Sophomore cornerback Kitan Crawford is also a name to watch with Jahdae Barron still out.

Texas is getting pretty thin at corner at a really bad time. It’s not just an underrated TCU offense that is important for Texas to be effective against. Texas has the Oklahoma Sooners and an offense under Lincoln Riley that we shouldn’t expect to be down for too long, on Oct. 9.

Thompson was playing really well at corner this fall for the Longhorns. He got his first career pick-six last weekend in that big 35-point win over Texas Tech. He’s actually played better than Jamison through four games this fall.

Texas comes into this meeting with TCU with a record of 3-1 (1-0 BIg 12) following the win over Texas Tech at home on Sep. 25. Meanwhile, TCU comes into this game with a record of 2-1 (0-0 Big 12) following their tough loss to the SMU Mustangs last weekend. Kickoff time between Texas and TCU is set for 11 a.m. CT at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth on Oct. 2.
