Texas football is about to face one of its biggest challenges of the early stages of the Big 12 slate. New Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian and his squad are set to take on head coach Gary Patterson and the stingy TCU Horned Frogs on the road this weekend in what promises to be one of the most decisive conference games of the season for this team.

This is not only the first time that Sark will take on Patterson as a head coach, it is the first Big 12 road start for breakout redshirt junior quarterback Casey Thompson. While Fort Worth should not be as rowdy with the Horned Frogs faithful as the environment was in Fayetteville a few weeks ago in the Longhorns’ humbling road loss to the Arkansas Razorbacks, this will still be a largely new situation for Thompson to find himself in.

TCU is never an easy opponent for Texas, as long as these two teams were Big 12 foes. Patterson and the Horned Frogs won six of the last seven outings against the Longhorns. The last time Texas beat TCU was back in 2018, in a 31-16 home win under former head coach Tom Herman. The all-time series record still favors Texas over TCU, at 63-27-1.

Texas comes into this game sporting a record of 3-1 (1-0 Big 12) following a dominant 35-point win in the Big 12 opener last weekend over the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Meanwhile, TCU comes in with a record of 2-1 (0-0 Big 12) following a tough one-possession loss last weekend at the hands of the SMU Mustangs.

Entering this game, Texas is a four point favorite over TCU, with the over/under set at 65 points. The ESPN matchup predictor (based on the Football Power Index) gives Texas nearly a 70 percent chance to beat TCU.

Here’s a look at the live stream, kick off time, pick for the game, and more as Texas takes on TCU on the road in Fort Worth on Oct. 2.

Injured Texas football players

There are some similar injuries of note for Texas this weekend against TCU, compared to last weekend’s outing against Texas Tech. First and foremost, Sark announced this week that redshirt freshman wide receiver Troy Omeire will miss the entire season after undergoing a knee procedure.

We will have to wait even longer for the college debut of Omeire. This will be the second straight season that Omeire is injured with a knee ailment.

And Omeire is not the only Texas wideout that had an injury update come down this week. Redshirt junior wide receiver Joshua Moore came up with an injured ankle in practice this week. The good news here is that Moore looks good to game for the TCU game, despite the ankle injury.

Yet, the injury news for the Longhorns in the receiving corps wasn’t as bad this week as it was in the secondary. Most importantly, Texas will be missing senior cornerback Josh Thompson in this game, as he suffered a concussion this week. Losing Thompson is a huge hole to make up for this secondary against TCU.

In place of the concussed Thompson, former McNeese State grad transfer and senior corner Darion Dunn should get the call. Dunn and sophomore cornerback Kitan Crawford could both play key roles with Thompson injured this weekend, though.

Dunn has played well in spots this fall. But this could be his first start playing with an FBS team.

And the final injury of note for the secondary is another detrimental one. Former four-star recruit and sophomore corner Jahdae Barron will miss the second game in a row as he is still recovering from injury this week. Hopefully Barron will be able to return for the Longhorns in the Red River Rivalry game next weekend against the Oklahoma Sooners.

Missing both Thompson and Barron will create a sizable gap in the secondary for the Longhorns against a pretty good passing offense in TCU.

Picking Texas football vs. TCU

Texas passed a key test last weekend to start off the Big 12 slate in a 70-35 point win over Texas Tech. The emerging three-headed monster for the Longhorns on offense between Thompson, star sophomore running back Bijan Robinson, and freshman wideout Xavier Worthy looked great.

This trio will be counted on once again to spark the offense early on. It feels like Texas needs to get off and running fast, or else Sark’s squad will find it very difficult to play catch-up on the road against a difficult opponent once again.

TCU was a real thorn in the side of Texas of late, and it’s hard to know what the outcome of this game will be, despite what the matchup looks like on paper at this point of the season. It should be close, but Texas’ offense should be able to reel this one off in the end.

Final score prediction: Texas-46, TCU-38
