Texas Football: 3 reasons the Longhorns will dominate TCU
Casey Thompson can take advantage of a TCU defensive line lacking pass rush this year
We’ll see how long this holds true, but Patterson and the Horned Frogs had a lot of trouble generating pressure in rushing the passer in their first three games of the season. TCU has just three sacks through their first three games. Linebackers and defensive ends accustomed to wreaking a lot of havoc, such as Ochaun Mathis and Dee Winters, haven’t gotten a great push in rushing the passer yet this year.
What doesn’t help the Horned Frogs here is the fact that the Texas offensive line (which features a lot of the same personnel that it does this fall) actually performed very well against them last year. In fact, four of the five offensive linemen that started for Texas against TCU last season are still in the mix this fall. And that was one of the three highest-graded pass-blocking efforts of 2020 for the Longhorns in the trenches.
This all spells a decent day from redshirt junior breakout quarterback Casey Thompson. If there is one thing, among many, that Thompson does well it is his ability to throw on the run and have a great feel of when to escape the pocket. On 13 plays this fall where Thompson came under pressure, he’s got just one sack, no adjusted interceptions, and a 75.0 adjusted completion percentage.
Thompson has played well for the Longhorns this fall. He’s now got an insane adjusted completion percentage north of 82, 565 passing yards, 11 total touchdowns, two picks, and two turnover-worthy plays. This just feels like a different offense this fall with this emerging three-headed monster between freshman wideout Xavier Worthy, Thompson, and Bijan.
