Turnovers finally play positive role for Texas

There were finally more positive takeaways for the Longhorns defense in the second half than there were negatives against a good Big 12 offense. Texas gave up less than 30 points to a TCU offense that has a good number of weapons. And one of those scores came largely courtesy of a near-touchdown kick return from JD Spielman.

Texas did get a solid outing from their linebackers between senior DeMarvion Overshown and junior Luke Brockermeyer.  You can’t judge this game based on the defensive grade or missed tackles for Overshown. While he did have a team-high four missed tackles in this game, only one was really something that was costly for this defense.

Overshown has a lot of pressure on his shoulders to assume so much responsibility in defending the run and the pass. And when the defensive line doesn’t get the push it needs at the line of scrimmage, it puts the linebackers at a real disadvantage when defending the run. That was the case often when TCU gave the ball to their starting running back.

More so than anything else, Overshown helped the Longhorns get a key turnover on a fumble in the second half. That play really helped swing the momentum in Texas’ direction.

Texas now has multiple key turnovers in the last two games that really helped push momentum in their favor for good. This is a change in narrative that will hopefully remain for Pete Kwiatkowski and the Longhorns moving forward.
