Casey Thompson is not the savior

This was definitely the worst game of Casey Thompson‘s career thus far. TCU looked to have him figured out in the first half. He also struggled to hit a lot of the intermediate routes he threw, and he had way too high of a frequency of turnover-worthy plays. Thompson registered a career-worst turnover-worthy play rate north of 13 percent.

Thompson had one interception and four turnover-worthy plays in this win over TCU. The deep ball also just wasn’t there for Thompson. Going just one-of-four on deep balls in this game, Thompson had one of the worst showings of his career trying to break defenses over the top in his career thus far.

It sometimes took some screen plays and shorter throws to get Thompson in rhythm to really open things up for the offense.

You have to give some props to TCU’s defense for preparing well for this game. But Thompson also didn’t get too much help early on from his receiving corps. Texas still had three drops in this game, giving Thompson an adjusted completion percentage north of 68.

The main takeaway here should be the fact that the Longhorns still have hope for what Thompson can do for this offense. TCU has a decent pass defense, and Thompson didn’t get much help from his receivers. But Thompson still helped Texas get over the hump against a stingy opponent in TCU in his first Big 12 road start.

Thompson needs to now move on to next week and come up with a big performance in the Red River Rivalry game against the Oklahoma Sooners.
